Through the Upper Canada District School Board’s summer learning initiatives, high school students are earning reach-ahead credits online and elementary students are enhancing their knowledge in literacy and math. The UCDSB’s Summer Learning Program and Summer Semester eLearning initiatives are allowing more than 1,400 students to enhance their education over the summer months.

K-6 Summer Learning Programs
The UCDSB is offering its Summer Learning Program at eight sites throughout the district where students who have completed Grades 1-3 benefit from lessons in non-fiction literacy and mathematics. The three-week program is being offered from July 8 to 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students enjoy three hours of academic instruction, and one hour of physical activity per day, as well as nutritional support to help them learn.

Participants benefit from more individualized attention than during the school year. With two specially trained teachers in each class and an average class size of only 15 students, the initiative prepares students requiring additional help for the coming school year.

The program is for students requiring support in early literacy and numeracy skills, who might benefit from summer reinforcement.

The program, which has been running in various forms since 2013, generates some impressive results. Students are tested before and after the program, and data shows each student advances at least one reading level and some experience increases of 10 or more levels.

Summer Semester Online Program
Students in Grades 7-12 are also benefiting from the UCDSB's Summer Semester Online Program, operated by the TR Leger School of Adult, Alternative and Continuing Education. The program is offering 47 courses online that students can work anytime and anywhere they have access to the internet, earning themselves a NEW credit over the month of July.

These programs offer students a chance to reach ahead to earn a NEW credit or lighten their course load for the following year.

The format of the programming allows our students, as well as International students studying with the UCDSB, to hone their modern learning skills.

This is a unique opportunity to obtain some 21st century learning skills as the foundation of these courses are self-directed learning, problem solving and online collaboration.

Summer Co-op and Summer Cadet Co-op
TR Leger is also offering UCDSB students:
Summer Cooperative Education credits. Students can complete either an unpaid volunteer co-op placement or a paid co-op placement linked to their current job. (2 credits maximum)

Summer Cadet Cooperative Education credits.  Available to students currently registered to attend the Summer Cadet Training Programs. (2 credits maximum)
