GSS Equity Club Students Raise Money for Local Food Bank & Learns About Food Insecurity
Posted on 12/08/2022

December 8, 2022Since its inception five years ago, Gananoque Secondary School’s (GSS) Equity Club has been challenging issues of marginalization in society. This year, one of their focuses has been on food insecurity. As a result, they created a school-wide Chili Cookoff to raise awareness and funds for Gananoque Food Bank.

Comprised of 13 Grades 9 to 12 students, the equity club held their event on December 2. Ten chilli chefs – five students and five GSS staff members secured a spot to compete in the friendly competition to become the First Annual Chilli Champ.

Fifty “Celebrity Judges” (a.k.a.) other GSS students and staff) bought in to cast their ballots for the best batch. Each judge got two votes. In a landslide victory, that title went to staff member Stacie Hooey.

The total amount raised for the local food bank was $280, which will directly help those within the community of Gananoque.

Students also raised awareness of food insecurity, learned about the challenges faced by others, and how to be active citizens in their community.
