Funding announcement for new Brockville school.

April 29, 2022 (Brockville, ON) – The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is proud to announce that it has received additional funding from the Ministry of Education and the approval to proceed with the new Brockville Elementary School to be located at 556 King St. West.

The new Brockville school has been part of a long-term vision for the school board as a means to better serve the current and new families of Brockville. It will enhance the community’s educational and recreational infrastructure to accommodate long-term growth and sustainability. The school will be built on a 14.3-acre parcel of land close to the Brock Trail, that will provide students and community members with a state-of-the art facility, lots of outdoor green space and ample parking.

The school will have capacity for 504 students and feature 17 regular classrooms, four kindergarten rooms, a room dedicated to delivering special education support, a resource room, a large gym and learning commons.

There will also be dedicated child care and early years space within the school that will be able to accommodate more than 60 children in the 0-3 age group.

The building will be a modern, single-story school that is fully accessible with a number of green initiatives, including solar panels and electric car charging stations.

“This project has been in the works for some time and we are now prepared to move full steam ahead to the next phase of this project, which is securing the contractor for the build,” says John McAllister, UCDSB Chair of the Board. “We’re thrilled that the Ministry of Education and our local MPP have put so much support behind this project. It’s truly going to be a significant asset to our current and future students.”

The project represents a $25.5 million investment in education, for the youth and families in the Brockville area. Funding and approval for this project is part of the province’s capital investment program to support students with better learning spaces.

“After a decade when the previous government closed over 600 schools across the province, the Government of Ontario is once again building new schools, improving existing educational facilities, creating child care spaces for working families, and investing in our young people,” said Minister of Education, Stephen Lecce. “By building a new Brockville Elementary School, our government is providing Brockville students with modern, state-of-the-art classrooms to prepare them for the jobs of the future.”

Since the acquisition of the land in 2018, the project has moved through the design phase and the UCDSB will be ready to tender this project in June 2022.

“The additional funding and approval to tender for a new Brockville South Elementary School is great news for our community,” said Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. “This investment will ensure families and students have access to a quality, state-of-the-art learning environment with modern ventilation, internet connectivity and technology in the years ahead.”

The UCDSB is projecting a completion date of January 2024. Once complete, this new school will replace Commonwealth Public School and Toniata Public School.
