Family Literacy Day 2020

January 27, 2020 (Upper Canada, ON)Today is Family Literacy Day and many schools in the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) are holding special activities to celebrate.

Family Literacy Day is an initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and is held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

At South Crosby Public School, students participated in a book exchange program where they brought in and donated books in the weeks prior and today. Each student was able to take home a different book of their choice. Today, the school is hosting an afternoon of literacy-based activities for all students to take part in.

Commonwealth Public School, Iroquois Public School, Laggan Public School and Longue Sault Public School invited family members and members of the community into the schools for reading activities with students.

Lyn Public School held a week-long read-a-thon from January 20 to 24 as a way to encourage students to read at home each night. As a school, they collected $1,290 in pledges for a total of 32,000 hours read between January 13 and 17. The money will be used to purchase new books and literacy items for the school.

“I am so pleased that our schools are connecting with the community to reinforce literacy skills,” says UCDSB Chair John McAllister. “Reading as a family is important for young, creative minds and also strengthens the family bond.”
