UCDSB Celebrates Staying Connected for Education Week May 4-8
Posted on 05/04/2020

Today marks the first day of Education Week, a week that is recognized and celebrated annually by school boards across the province. While this Education Week looks different than any other we’ve celebrated, The Upper Canada District School Board’s theme for this year is: Staying Connected – to Learning and Each Other.

The UCDSB has made it a priority to continue to stay connected to students and their families, supporting them in distance learning and checking in on their well-being. Although we are all physically distancing, it’s important for our students and their families to know they are not alone.

“We want to continue to build on the caring relationships we’ve established with our students and their families, to let them know that we are here for them. We need to stay connected – to the learning, to our friends, and to our communities. In doing so, we will be able to offer comfort and reassurance to others during a time that is unfamiliar and uncertain,” says Stephen Sliwa, Director of Education.

During this phase of distance learning, and as part of the UCDSB Learn at Home strategy, our students and school staff have been sharing stories, photos and videos with each other as a means to share their experiences and the learning they’ve been engaged in. This week, we are encouraging our students to reach out to a friend from school, a teacher or other staff member, or a family member that they have not connected with recently and share with them
one thing they have learned over the last month.

“I’m proud of the commitment that our school district and our students have been putting into staying connected to their learning and to each other. What we are all being asked to do – stay home, learn from a distance, physically distance – isn’t easy or natural, but I am proud about how everyone is persevering,” says Chair John McAllister.
