Upper Canada District School Board’s Toniata Public School placed in the top 10 for the CBC Canadian Music Class Challenge for the Category MusiCounts Passion Prize this week.

The CBC Canadian Music Class Challenge is a nation-wide challenge to promote music education in the country. CBC invited music instructors to teach their students a Canadian song from a pre-approved list and submit their best performance.

This year, over 15,000 students from more than 1,000 schools from every province and territory participated in this contest.

“We are so incredibly proud of the students and their performance in this competition,” said Trevor Kilgour, the school’s French and music teacher. “They have made it into the top 10 from submissions all across Canada, which is a huge accomplishment.”

Kilgour and teaching colleague Katie Souder spearheaded organizing the contest submission, which consisted of a video performance of Raffi’s “Must be Santa.”

Students from kindergarten to grade 6 took part in the singing, and everything from song choice, to the clothing to the backdrop reflected the school’s Christmas spirit. To ensure the whole school was involved, they divided students into three sections.

The winners of each category will receive up to $5,000 to purchase new musical instruments and equipment for their music program. The winners will be announced December 18.
