School Closure Extended

This afternoon, the provincial government confirmed that elementary schools will continue with remote learning until January 25 for all students in our region.

While we want to see students back in our schools, we understand and support the provincial government’s decision to remain vigilant to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to keep our students and staff safe. We need to ensure that we continue with daily screening for symptoms and follow public health protocols that are in place if we want to slow this virus.

As per the newest provincial directions announced today, here’s how students in the Upper Canada District School Board will continue with remote learning until schools are re-opened for in-person instruction:

  • Elementary students who were enrolled in in-person learning prior to the winter break (as of December 18, 2020) will continue in online learning as confirmed with their classroom teacher on January 4.

  • Elementary students studying asynchronously with non-digital resources will be able to pick up materials early next week. You will receive information from your school about the pick-up process over the next couple of days.

  • Elementary students studying in the asynchronous digital model prior to the winter break (as of December 18, 2020) will not see any change to their current learning model or practices.
  • Secondary students will continue with remote learning plans that were put in place this week. Any questions about courses or materials should be directed to your teacher(s).

  • As we shared earlier, there are plans in place to support students with special education needs through the implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). Supports that were available to students during in-person learning will continue to be available to students learning remotely as appropriate. The board is using a phased approach to support students who require more intensive support. If you have any questions, please contact your school or classroom teacher directly.

We appreciate your support and patience during these uncertain times. We must all work together to manage COVID-19 in our communities.

Thank you,

Stephen Sliwa
Director of Education
Upper Canada District School Board
