Winning Car and Team

June 4, 2018 (Almonte, ON) - Two Almonte District High School students were part of a first-place team at the University of Waterloo Electric Vehicle Challenge on May 26th in Waterloo, Ontario.

Bronson Reid and Dawson Giardino were part of the EV Pioneer Team that earned first in the rookie class of the 12-volt competition and 4th overall in the 24-volt competition, after suffering a flat tire mid-way through the second race. The 12-volt entry, co-driven by Reid and teammate Will Rolston, performed an amazing 27 laps of the one-kilometre track, while Giardino and co-driver Adam Relist performed 34 laps in the 24-volt competition.

Almonte District High School Principal Nancy Holman was impressed by the boys’ success.

“I am proud of the passion, innovative ideas and creativity of these young students,” said Principal Holman. “Their joy for learning is inspiring,”

Reid and Giardino said the experience gave them the confidence that they can compete with the best in the province.

“Some people weren’t even expecting us to make a lap,” reflected Reid. “It was a lot of fun, competing against some of the university kids and beating them.”

The pair said the experience offered several benefits including learning to work under pressure, learning how a team could work well together, and mechanical knowledge. With the help of their teammates, sponsors, family and friends, the pair was able to modify the vehicle with a custom clutch and finely tune the wheel alignment. This gave the car advantages such as the ability to coast long distances and emerge out of corners with speed.

Other members of the community team were: Gabriel Braden, Micah Black, Zac Harvie Sam Griffen, Danny Wall, and Curtis Hermans.
