Pink Shirt Day

February 26, 2020 (Upper Canada, ON) – Today, Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) schools are celebrating International Pink Shirt Day by wearing pink shirts and holding assemblies and other activities to show they are anti-bully advocates and to celebrate each other’s differences.

Pink Shirt Day is a movement that is celebrated internationally and began in 2007 after two Nova Scotia high school students took a stand against bullying when their classmate was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. The focus this year is lifting each other up by looking beyond the differences and celebrating what makes us unique.

Eamer’s Corners Public School welcomed children’s entertainer Paul Behnke to the school for presentations on “The Bully and the Purple Pants.” Using songs, stories and role-playing, Behnke explained strategies for dealing with bullies.

Maynard Public School organized a school-wide activity where students and staff created pink shirts out of paper and wrote how they “lift each other up with kindness”. Afterwards, they linked arms throughout the hallway.

Brockville Collegiate Institute is extending Pink Shirt Day and hosting a school-wide assembly with Live Different tomorrow, February 27, focusing on developing resilient, compassionate youth.

Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute is also extending Pink Shirt Day. They had LGBTQ+ presentation from Calvin Neufeld yesterday and are planning a social media presentation from the Smiths Falls Police and Victim Witness of Lanark County tomorrow for Grade 9 and 10 students.

“I am so pleased to see that our staff and students are taking a stand against bullying,” says UCDSB Chair John McAllister. “Small acts of kindness can have lasting impacts on our communities.”
