Kate Gover is a Kindergarten teacher at Drummond Central School being recognized for her creative teaching style and organizing fun activities that bring the school closer to its community.

Kate is creative in developing engaging lessons for her students. A new investigation on bats, trees, or space can be inspired by something as simple as a students’ T-shirt, prompting days of art and research to add to hallway murals that share their findings.

Kate uses outdoor education to inspire learning, incorporating a daily walk of the school grounds. They check the birdhouses, feeders, and changes in the trees, plants, and vegetable gardens. She is also involved with the school’s joint project with Algonquin College on greening the school grounds, and she and her class are always enthusiastic to plant and harvest the school garden. Her classroom also has a vast collection of nature finds, such as antlers, bird’s nests, and terrariums featuring insects and plants.

Her impact on the school goes far beyond her Kindergarten class. She started the school’s Craft and Knitting Club, and was instrumental in bringing the Historica Fair to the school.

Kate also came up with the concept for the school’s annual Friendship Feast, in which students prepare a meal for the school population and special guests from the community. The event is done in collaboration with staff from Perth’s community kitchen who teach cooking skills to Grades 5 and 6 students. The dinner is an important part of the school year, strengthening the connection between the school and wider community.

For her exemplary teaching methods and success in building connections between the school and surrounding community, the Upper Canada District School Board is pleased to honour Kate with a Director’s Award of Merit.
