Colleen Leslie

This caring Music Teacher is being recognized for her dedication to the development and success of her students at Seaway District High School.

Colleen Leslie is the Band Director at Seaway DHS and each year, she arranges a variety of activities for the band both in the school and in the community. The band has participated in Christmas concerts, spring concerts, the Kinsmen Music Festival, the Capital Region Music Festival, and performances at local elementary schools.  She has also actively supported the students in various fundraising efforts for the band’s activities and instrument repair.

For the past two years, Colleen has arranged and accompanied students on a weekend band camp, where students work with a professor from Queen’s University and participated in a variety of band-bonding activities. Because of efforts like these, the music program at Seaway is growing steadily each year.

Colleen encouraged four students from the band, who had a particularly keen interest in music, to form a small brass and beats band on their own. They are now known as Almost Synchronized, and they perform locally on a regular basis. She has been instrumental to the quartet by arranging various performances throughout the years.  Almost Synchronized has won gold at the Kinsmen Music Festival, silver at the Capital Region Music Festival and has performed at many local music celebrations, notably at two Ottawa Senators games.

The group began composing their own music last year, and Colleen made arrangements to work with a professional composer via Skype who provided the band members feedback and suggestions. In preparation for the possibility that they would pursue music in post-secondary, she spent her own time instructing them in music theory and arranging theory exams in Brockville.

Colleen’s dedication to her students certainly does not end at bell time. She has been a major part in the development and growth of many students throughout their high school years.

For her mentorship and encouragement for her students’ success, the Upper Canada District School Board is proud to honour Colleen with a Director’s Award of Merit.
