Krista Mano

Krista Mano is the principal at Morrisburg Public School and is being honoured for the integral role she plays in ensuring disadvantaged students get the food they need to learn.

This veteran educator is a leader in Operation Backpack, a partnership between Morrisburg Public School and the House of Lazarus food bank. The program provides nutritious meals and snacks to children in need so they don’t go hungry on weekends. The House of Lazarus provides food for the program, while teachers at the school provide names of students they feel could benefit.

Under Krista’s leadership, Operation Backpack is conducted with discretion, without any child in the program being identified by their peers. Teachers send backpacks from identified students to the school office following the last recess each Friday afternoon. Staff members fill each backpack with two breakfasts, two lunches, snacks of fresh fruit and vegetables, and milk so children can enjoy healthy meals over the weekend. The weekly program serves 80 of the school’s 151 students.

Operation Backpack is just one example of how Krista is a strong school leader with a positive, caring attitude. Each year, she also hosts a talent show at the school, which is open to any student wishing to perform.

Krista provides these extras to help students succeed because her interest is in all children, not just the academically successful. That caring attitude means her office door remains open for discussions to any parent, staff or student, as she strives to make Morrisburg PS even better.

For her leadership skills, her sense of empathy and caring, and her efforts to make life better for all her students, the Upper Canada District School Board is proud to recognize Krista with a Director’s Award of Merit.
