April 8, 2019 (Brockville, ON) – Char-Lan District High School student Nicholas Oeggerli placed first in individual carpentry Saturday, April 6 at the Skills Ontario Qualifying Competition in Kingston.
The Grade 11 student will advance to the Skills Ontario Competition in Toronto May 6-8. He also earned a red ribbon for first, as well as a $500 bursary to attend St. Lawrence College after graduation.
“It feels pretty good and I’m really excited about the provincials,” said Oeggerli. “I hope I can do well there.”
The regional skills competition is held each year as a qualifying event for the annual provincial skills competition. It also highlights the trades as a possible career choice for students and a pathway to learn a career while earning money as an apprentice, says Ashley Grant, a Student Success Learning Partner with the Upper Canada District School Board. Students competed in four events: welding, individual carpentry, culinary and TV/Video Production.
Oeggerli said the key to his success at the competition was staying focused and following plans carefully. He was tasked with building a doghouse at the competition.
He said the competition was helpful by providing carpentry experience and he hopes to study carpentry or cabinet making at a post-secondary institution.
This year’s qualifier attracted nearly 40 students from across Eastern Ontario.
