UCDSB Celebrates Education Week May 6-10

May 6, 2019 (Upper Canada, ON) – Staff and Students across the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) are celebrating Education Week from May 6-10.

Education Week is an annual event celebrated by school boards across the province and is an opportunity for students, teachers and parents to celebrate teaching excellence and student achievement. This year, the theme for Education Week is “Education that Works for You.”

Many UCDSB schools are holding events, activities and recognizing their educators this week. Some of the events are as follows:

  • The annual UCDSB Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) +4 will be taking place over four days during Education Week, with Grade 5 and 6 students from 16 schools participating.
  • Front of Yonge Elementary School has a full week of activities planned. Staff and students are wearing clothes with words to appreciate literacy, discussing education and career choices and visits from community members to speak about local jobs, and a Spelling Bee.
  • Maple Grove Public School has scientists visiting the school and will be enhancing their school yard with art pieces and games.
  • Maxville Public School has authours coming speak about the books they have written and the process of writing.
  • Pineview Public School is organizing a school musical Rock Bottom, featuring students from grades 3-6. The musical will be performed Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and Thursday at 1:00 p.m.

Additionally, Lindsey Howes, a teacher at Glengarry District High School will be receiving the Excellence in Teaching - Elementary Award from the Ontario Council for Technology Education (OCTE) on Friday for her outstanding commitment to present the technology component of the Science and Technology.

“Education Week is an opportunity for our students and schools to showcase the excellent work they do each and every day. We strive to always bring students a variety of learning methods so that the curriculum is inclusive and understandable for all,” says UCDSB Chair John McAllister. “Every week is education week in the UCDSB.”
