April 9, 2018 (Elgin, ON) Leeds Grenville MPP Steve Clark honoured South Crosby Public School Principal Monique Antoine-Hartley with the provincial Leading Women, Building Communities Award during the school’s monthly Panther Pride assembly.

At the assembly, Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) Superintendent Ron Ferguson joined South Crosby Public School staff, students and community members to congratulate Principal Hartley on her award.

The Leading Women, Building Communities Award is an Ontario government award that seeks to acknowledge and celebrate women who demonstrate exceptional leadership in working to improve the lives of others in their communities though volunteer work. Monique Antoine-Hartley has spearheaded numerous school/community initiatives and fundraisers, including food drives, Terry Fox events and raising more than $20,000 to build a park in memory of former classmate Parker Simpson.

“I can’t think of a more valuable lesson for a principal to share with students than to show them why it’s so important to be a volunteer,” said MPP Clark in his comments during the ceremony. “You learned that by giving just some of your time, you can help a lot of other people. Thank you to Monique for being such a tremendous role model and someone who is truly deserving of this Leading Women, Building Communities Award.”

“I am extremely shocked and humbled by this award,” said Principal Hartley. “This award does not belong to just me. I have an amazing community here, a wonderful parent community, a wonderful staff that deserve this a much as I do because I can’t do my work without their support.”

Ferguson added that “it’s wonderful that this award is being given to her and she is sharing it with the community. This further highlights the type of person that Monique is.”

This provincial recognition program started in 2006. More details about the program can be found online on the Ministry of the Status of Women’s website.
