UCDSB Students Excel at
Eastern Ontario Regional Sears
Ontario Drama Festival

By Mark Calder

(Ottawa) – Two students with the Upper Canada District School Board  distinguished themselves recently at the Eastern Ontario Regional Sears Ontario Drama Festival  at Woodroffe High School in Ottawa, said Al Merizzi, a drama teacher at St. Lawrence Secondary School.

Perth and District Collegiate Institute  student Madelyn Fyfe won an Award of Merit for her portrayal of Sam, one of two sisters featured in the PDCI play  Finding a Chord . Fyfe gave an impassioned performance during the play, in which her character has a heart-to-heart conversation with her artistic sister.

St. Lawrence Secondary School  student Blair Petryna also won an Award of Merit as Frank, the peacemaker in the play Mere Mortals . The play is about three construction workers toiling away on the girders of a skyscraper 50 stories up. Frank is the voice of reason, trying to temper the sarcastic tone of Joe as he continues a confrontational relationship with Charlie, a middle-aged construction worker who feels his voice should be heard because of his age.

The festival ran from April 12-16 and offered a chance for students to perform in an adjudicated festival, and to enjoy workshops on topics such as character development, collective theatre, Shakespeare and stage combat.
