UCDSB Athletes Take 35 Golds at
2016 EOSSAA Track and Field Championships

(Brockville) – Athletes with the Upper Canada District School Board won 35 gold medals at the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (EOSSAA) Track and Field Championships in Brockville.

“We had many, many strong performances,” said Carleton Place High School (CPHS) teacher Jamie Bell, meet convener. “As a board we performed extremely well.”

The prestigious meet attracted 1,500 athletes from across the region, who competed at Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS) Thursday and Friday in an event hosted by the Lanark County Inter-School Athletic Association.

The TISS Pirates were once again a force to be reckoned with, as school athletes won 13 gold medals and the trophy for championship school team. TISS athlete Claire Cushing took gold in the midget girls’ 400-metre dash, with a time of 1:00.65, and the midget girls’ 800-metre event, with a time of 2:25.38. Pirates star athlete Thomas Nedow won the senior boys’ shot put with a distance of 15.48 metres and senior boys’ discus, throwing 50.36 metres.

The TISS midget boys’ 4 by 100-metre relay team of Aidan VanBeek, Derek Pryer, Ata Yilmaz and Ethan Givogue set a new EOSSAA record with a winning time of 46.33. The team was anchored by a solid performance by VanBeek, who also collected golds in the boys’ 200-metre, and 400-metre dash.

TISS student Lucas Woodhall won both the midget boys’ shot put with a distance of 15.02 metres, and the midget boys’ discus with a throw of 45.91 metres.

Other strong performances at the meet included: Jessica Stevens, CPHS, gold, junior girls’ 80-metre hurdles, gold, junior girls’ long jump; Hailee Banks, Rideau District High School , gold, junior girls’ shot put; and Olivia Bourque, Perth and District Collegiate Institute , gold, junior girls’ triple jump.
