(Avonmore) – The Montague Public School Mustangs edged out Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS) Monday to take the Upper Canada Cup Intermediate Girls’ Volleyball Championship for the fourth straight year.

Montague won the tournament, held at Tagwi Secondary School, in three sets, losing the first 25-23 but then rebounding to take the second and third sets 25-21 and 15-9.

Mustangs Coach Jennifer Peters said the victory was a team effort that came down to one thing – determination.

“The girls played hard in all of their games,” said Peters. “Knowing Montague had won the last three years in a row helped the girls find the motivation to play hard and win a fourth.

“They never give up. It doesn’t matter if they are leading or losing by 10, they know they always need to keep their heads in the game.”

In the semifinals, TISS beat Rideau District High School in straight sets to advance, while Montague took three sets to defeat Seaway District High School.

Rideau won the consolation final.
