Equity and Inclusion

We all belong logoThe mission of the Upper Canada District School Board is to prepare all students for a successful life, but we recognize that not all people have an equal opportunity to achieve that successful life.

Our school board is committed to reducing achievement gaps and improving learning outcomes for all students, regardless of race, class, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and other historical forms of marginalization. 

Systemic anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism still exists in our society alongside many other forms of discrimination. This includes in the small communities of Eastern Ontario where we live, work, play, and raise our children. We are reminded that we must continue to strive to ensure the dignity and human rights of all people.

As a community we must recognize that equity of opportunity and equity of access to the full range of programs, the delivery of services, and resources are critical to the achievement of successful educational and social outcomes for those served by the school system as well as those who serve the system. However, we understand that we have some work to do and that the path forward must include actively listening, learning, and engaging.

The UCDSB is committed to an equitable education system that upholds and reflects the principles of fair and inclusive education, which should permeate all policies, programs, practices, and operations. We will need to have difficult conversations, at home, at work, and in our classes to address the disparities in our communities.

We must challenge ourselves, at every level of our organization, to confront our own biases and blind spots. We must engage our communities that have not been historically honoured by the education system so that we can truly prepare all students for the successful life they deserve and we believe that the pursuit of learning is meaningless if it does not build a strong sense of caring and respect for all.
