Carleton Place High School Bears Reach
Consolation Final at OFSAA Girls’ AA Basketball Championship

By Mark Calder

(Kingsville) – Carleton Place High School (CPHS) reached the consolation final Saturday at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Girls’ AA Basketball Championship.

The Bears fought hard, but fell 42-22 to a strong squad from Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School in Orillia.

CPHS Coach Barry Russell said a small squad on the bench, which fell to seven with the loss of forward Kate Bains to injury earlier in the tournament, made it difficult for Carleton Place in their fifth game of the championship.

Strong defence by Fogarty shut down Bears star Maddie Reid, keeping her to 13 points in the game. Fogarty keyed in on Reid because she was having a red-hot tournament, posting 123 points going into the final.

“We were happy to be there,” said Russell. “Everybody played their hearts out in that last game. But the team we played was bigger and stronger and there were more of them and they took away our game. The little team that could just ran out of gas.”

Russell said for a team that was 2-2 in their first four games of the season, ending in the consolation final at OFSAA was more than he could have hoped for in his final season as coach. Russell will retire at the end of this year.
