March 31, 2020 (Brockville, ON)Food from Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) school nutrition programs will be diverted to area food banks to assist families during the COVID-19 crisis.

The move is being taken under an agreement between the Upper Canada Leger Centre for Education and Training (UCLCET), which runs school nutrition programs on behalf of the school board, and the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, which funds them.

“We are happy that the food and funds that go into these programs will continue to be used as they were intended. There are a number of children that rely on these programs, and a number of families that already rely on our community food banks. We hope that diverting this funding and the food will help alleviate some of the added pressure that is being felt by these vital community services,” said Chair of the Board John McAllister.

Under the agreement, cheese, yogurt, cereal bars, bread and other nutritious food will be donated, with the understanding donated supplies will be reserved for families with school-aged children.

“The donations will help our students fuel their learning at home during a time of social distancing. We want to ensure all our students are well-cared for during this unusual time, and that they’re prepared to learn when they return to class,” says UCLCET Executive Director Matt Raby.

Food will be donated to the South Grenville Food Bank in Prescott, the Agape Centre in Cornwall, the Hawkesbury Central Food Bank, Rockland Help Centre, Operation Harvest Sharing in Brockville, and the Gananoque Food Bank. Donations will start to be delivered this week.
