October 21, 2019 (Brockville, ON) - Students from Thousand Islands Secondary SchoolRussell Public School, Pakenham Public School, and Char-Lan District High School have joined peers across the country to take part in mock elections in their schools to cast votes for real candidates running in their ridings. These mock elections are part of Student Vote Canada activities.

In the run-up to the mock elections, teachers discussed election issues with students using resources provided by Student Vote Canada. The goal was to get them thinking about their vote.

“It allows students to experience what voting’s really like,” says Conrad Walpot, teacher and mock vote organizer at TISS. “It gave teachers the chance to talk about voting and why it’s important, and to discuss voter turnout. It’s pretty low among people in the 18 to 25 age bracket. We want to change that.”

During the school-based mock elections, students were involved in the whole process, not just voting. They acted as election volunteers and coordinated the election within their schools, giving them a full appreciation for the process and its importance.

“We asked students to be scrutineers and ballot counters, and had a group of them hand out ballots and later pick them up,” explains Walpot of the TISS vote. “It allows students to learn how an election works and experience what the ballot box is like.”

Results of the mock elections will be shared within the schools this week, after the close of polls in the real federal election. After results are shared, Walpot and other teachers will discuss mock election results with their students and compare them to federal results.
